Why we call it footbike

Footbike, scooter, kick bike or what is the thing really called?

One of the most frequent comments under our posts is:  “Footbike? Common guys, it is called a scooter!”

And you know what?  They are right!  In fact, it is a scooter. It has two wheels connected with a standing platform and handlebars. The rider pushes it forward by kicking, using his own power. Exactly like a scooter.

We prefer to refer to them as footbikes for several reasons.
  • The term “footbike” is recognized internationally. Many national associations use the term footbike in their English versions. Additionally, the International Association IKSA consistently refers to footbikes, footbiking, and footbikers, despite the abbreviation meaning International Kicksled and Scooter Association.
  • Australia has the Australian Footbike Association, which was established in 2008. We like to stick with the established terminology.
  • Footbiking is a small independent sport with regular competitions, including the World Championships held every two years.
  • Finally, one important reason is that we want to differentiate our big wheel scooters from other types of vehicles commonly referred to as scooters. When you search for “scooters” in any browser, you will be inundated with links related to small wheel scooters, e-scooters, or even small motorbikes.

We don’t want to be trendy at any cost by creating a new term. However, we would be pleased if the word “footbike” became popular and the public began to associate it with this fantastic sports equipment. Footbiking simply offers another opportunity for healthy movement in the fresh air and a lot of enjoyment.

We do not really care what someone calls it. All of the above-mentioned terms sound fine, and we can find a few more that people use. For example, a scooter bike, push bike, or a big wheel scooter.

Our mission is to convince people that this large scooter is worth trying. We will do our best to achieve this mission, regardless of its name.

We organize social rides in Perth for a small entry fee, or we hire our footbikes to give people the option to try them. We are actively working to expand our services to allow people in other Australian cities the same options.
